I am going away on holidays for a while & would like to add a message on the store front aswell as DISABLE checkout during this period. Does anyone know whether this is possible & how?

Why not just switch checkout to "CHECK OR MONEY ORDER" and have them mail a check to you for payment. They'll understand that it'll take some time for the mail to arrive and for checks to clear. Perhaps that will coincide with the time you're away?
Or, you could just click "Remove" on all your payment modules, and they won't be able to complete checkout.
Or, you could put your store into Showcase mode (Admin->Configuration-My Store->Store Status), and then there will be no add-to-cart options.
Or, you could simply put your store into Down For Maintenance mode (Admin->Configuration->Maintenance), and/or use the display notice to have it put a banner message on all pages. (That banner message will be indexed by search engines though!)
