I would wait for required add-ons to be 1.5 compatible. No point going backwards .....

Go with 1.5 and add the modules you want as they come available.

Don't hesitate to ask the authors if the module is compatible or about when the update will be available.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

i was in the same boat with that choice but i went with 1.5 and ive found that most of the old mods still work fine.

I set up a 2nd zen cart install that i install the old mods in first and test they work before adding to my proper site build installation

I would recommend setting up a simple test server for yourself and see if the addons you want to use are compatible or not.

The easiest way to set up a simple test server would be to use:

    Windows: WAMP
    Linux: LAMP
    Mac: MAMP

This is also a great way to make updating your site seamless, as long as the databases are configured correctly and you remember not to overwrite your config files for the admin or the main site.

If you've never done this before it's just like installing any other application (Windows point and click) and then you can visit your WWW director (main site directory) by simply typing 127.0.0.1 into your web-browser.
