Why strange /index/xxx urls showing my index page

ZC1.3.8a (im trying to upgrade ok...)

I recently deleted a load of products and suddenly my google serps dropped considerably.

Checking webmaster tools i saw there were a load of dead links to the deleted products.

The links were on the product descirption page - forward next buttons. and also at the bottom "newly added products" when looking at product descriptions.

Deleting the products had removed them from ZC catalog but had not removed all the links to them.

I have simple seo url mod on - i thought that was the problem but when i turned it off.. the problem was still there with the normal ZC urls

I am considering totally rebuilding my site because im worried the upgrade to ZC1.5 when i finally figure out how to do that - wont fix the problem.

Why would that be showing the front page content of my site

ive got loads of urls like that

change /qhmd for anything else will show

but change /index/ and you get a 404 page as you should

Im getting lots of dulicate urls in google search

It was doing the same for another folder c -"something" sorry cant remember

Ive been using simple seo urls but getting the same problem with it on or off!

I check it out on my other ZC cart sties... same problem.

In my Cpanel ERROR PAGES

for 401, 403,500 (but not 404) error is set to...

I put stars in there to stop google finding this

Could this be why i have a /index/ directory?

What are the correct settings to put in Cpanel error pages?

Im certain this has caused me to drop in google rankings because i ended up with having hundreds of versions identical to my index page in google search

I got rid of most of them using robots.txt but its still not good

I have been using Simple SEO Url for a long time now.

Recently i deleted some products and subsequently started getting thousands of crawl errors in Webmaster tools.

Im thinking to try Power URL or Magic URL

What is good these days? I think Simple SEO is being phased out?
