Default Products with zero (0) quantity disappear

I recently upgraded to 1.5.5 and see that products disappear from catalog when quantity level reaches zero (0). Everything I sell is one of a kind and when it is sold, it is no longer available. Still, I would like the listing to remain so the person who bought it, and others, can refer back to it. I want it to appear with a "sold out" so no one else can buy it. That is the way things worked in the old version I just upgraded from. I normally let "sold out" items hang out for a couple/few weeks and then manually delete them. Any thoughts as to how to make this happen? Thanks.

Head on over to yourAdmin >> Configuration >> Stock. Adjust accordingly.

I must be missing something. I have stock set as follows and item still does not appear in customer catalog

Mark product out of stock Out of Stock
Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to 1
Show Sold Out Image in place of Add to Cart 1

    What am I missing?

How was the update performed? What is/was the source of the files?

One of the suggested methods is by following these instructions: http://www.zen-cart.com/entry.php?3-...d-of-upgrading

The settings described appear correct to allow stock of a product to go to 0 and the product remain "present" to customers. They go on to prevent the addition of the product to the cart, but the product is still supposed to be visible to customers.

I did not "update" as such. I did a fresh clean install from square one using the default tamplate.

    Interesting.

To be sure we both agree that the actions taken agree with the above statement. No previous files were overwritten? All files related to the new version (1.5.5 (BTW is that just 1.5.5 or is it the most recent of 1.5.5d?)) were placed into an empty directory, and then somehow a database was populated? Are you using demo products to test out this operation? Your live database? A copy of your live database?

    1.5.5.d
No files overwritten. All brand new from scratch.
Yes, net new empty directory was used for install.
Bad news is that old database, 500+ products, was re-built from scratch. It was not converted in any way. I was able to use yet another test install to point to old database and do a lot of copy and paste, but each item was added by hand.
No these are not demo products. This is a live store with 500 items.

Upgraded or Brand New install? It can be one or the other but not both.

If you had a previous Zen Cart database, is there some reason why you didn't upgrade it as well? This could point to database problems.

Is there anything else not working as it should?

    BRAND NEW install.
Old database was from version 1.3 something and conversion sounded like a chore
