Define Order Status Depending on Payment Method Choice at Checkout?

We are using a customised version of a COD mod to let customers checkout on an instalment plan. It works well as the email they get when they use this method is customised with instructions on how to pay their deposit.

The only issue we have is a very slight one. The order status is marked as "pending" as this is our default order status for all new orders.

My questions is, is there a way to make new orders status default to "awaiting deposit" (already a setting in admin/localization/order status).... whenever the payment option chosen at checkout is our "pay by instalments" mod?

A properly-written module will have a pulldown in its settings which allows you to select the order-status assigned to orders when that module is used.
