Check out the Business Issues forum area here:

    http://www.zen-cart.com/forumdisplay...usiness-Issues

It has a Search Engines thread as well as other forums of interest.

Insofar as anyone can really figure out SEO, the primary things seem to be good content on your site and backlinks. Also a "good customer experience" when on your site.

Watch out about the backlinking, though, One of our main sites - the only site we had professionally SEO'd - is now undergoing google reconsideration following a backlinking penalty apparently apparently in part from our SEO. We have spent alot of time contacting sites/blogs, etc., trying to get incoming links removed.

That's the problem with google giving weight to incoming backlinks. The idea was that visitors would "vote" for your site, making it popular in google's eyes. Organic links, as google calls them. But with the whole SEO idea, everyone got the idea to make their own backlinks (inorganic, as google called it). That and spun articles and "bad neighborhoods" can cause great problems.

Enough of my rant for now....

You might also learn and consider pay-per-click, but that can cost you a bit upfront. Should bring immediate results, though, if done properly.

I have a general SEO question.

I see that many sites on first page of Google search have page names like:

    http://www.website.com/store/key-word-name-with-variations.htm

    example: http://www.laurenshope.com/category/...g-tags-for-men

    I still have names:

    http://www.website.com/store//index....roducts_id=213

Does Zen Cart have admin setting to change index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=16&products_id=213 to /produc-name-to-help-SEO ?

Or this is really does not matter?

There's no admin setting, but there are mods that accomplish that.

    No, it doesn't matter.

In my business many, maybe most, competitors use re-written URL's. In your case, that may account for so many such urls being on the first page of google. So one cannot jump to the conclusion that it's simply the urls that get them there. It's just that everyone is using them with shopping carts commercial or open source that likely have them built-in.

As stevesh said, zencart has a couple of free mods that can accomplish that. But the CEON mod is reputed to be the one least likely to cause conflict with other mods.

But although I understand that the zencart dynamic urls are fine with seo and google, even now I raise an eyebrow.
