How do I get information from the database for my custom reports?

I'm creating a new page independent of my store. It will reside on the same server. How do I extract information from the database in order to create my own custom reports for the invoices? I want to be able to grab customer information, item information, and so on.

I'm good with MySQL and PHP, I'm just asking for the logic of this to get me started.

Ok, I looked at the program. It's close, but doesn't have everything I need.

However, I can build what I need. I just need help getting started. All I need to do is be able to grab information from the database. If I can do it for one variable, I can figure out the rest.
