Areas of Interest

When a customer registers an account ,I need to show the "Areas of Interests" functionality option after that, It will be a list of check boxes like books, videos etc, so by clicking any of this interests ,the customer will get the updates as email .How to include this feature in it?

This would require adding fields in the Database to hold this information and adding these options to the create an account form

Doable but not for the faint of heart
