Custom Logo not appearing

I am following along with the tutorial on how to replace the default logo. I added a folder custom at /includes/templates and in the custom folder I have a images folder.

I created an additional folder named custom under /includes/languages/english and in that I put header.php

I modified the lines for the header logo and saved it. When I display the store page - nothing changes.

I should mention that I am testing this mod locally before doing it to the store on the web.

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Is a more exact path necessary rather than just the name of the logo file? I did try the last one with no effect....but thought I would mention it.

Is your logo image in this folder?

yes it is. It is also a png format file (don't think it that would make a difference but I thought I would mention it)

Did you use your admin's Tools->Template Selection to select "custom" as your active template?

No - I didn't think of checking template selection. When I went in to check it, I got a HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

The error says the page may be down for maintenance. So now I need to research this problem with the local site.

I looked at the Apache logs and found these two errors -

[Thu Nov 08 11:55:43 2012] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: C:/Websites/armkandies/favicon.ico

The second message is true - that file doesn't exist. But the first one I haven't a clue

That is not a normal file...I would be suspicious unless you are aware of where it came from

I don't have a clue - the test store is whatever I downloaded from Zen Cart. I unzipped and uploaded the files to the main server and then configured my laptop for the test server. I haven't made any modifications except for the ones outlined in this post.
