database error Upgrade failure - Probable Database issue?

I'm in the process of upgrading from 1.38a to the latest version and read and researched all of the info here. I then followed those procedures only to get this error upon loading the site the first time:

WARNING: An Error occurred, please refresh the page and try again.

.. obviously it was not that simple. (Fabulous error message..NOT)

Anyway.. dug through the code and I tracked it to "autoload_func.php" That script does a LOT of stuff in loops that would take hours to unravel.

So I attempted the upgrade from a different angle.. I installed a fresh version of the latest download and got it up and running. Applied the template without a problem (needed some tweeking but I held off on that for now). I then switched the database over to the "upgraded" version from the previous attempt. Got the same error. Therefore I'm concluding at the moment that either the database upgrade failed or there is something in the database that is "unexpected" by the zen cart code.

Hopefully I have provided enough info.. Does anyone have any ideas where in the database might be farkling this??

Thanks for any WAGs or advice..

    John..

You didn't do this upgrade to your "live" store database did you??

If so, did you backup the database before this??

    Of course not!

The upgrade "TEST" site is at

    http://dev9.esonicspider.net/shop_new/index.php

the COPY of the production site is

    http://dev9.esonicspider.net/shop/index.php

I have several backups of the database as well as the original production database is untouched.

Sorry that you don't like the error message. But since this is software that runs on live sites, it would be hugely irresponsible to display the inner details of the error message on-screen for customers and hackers and search engines to see.
Instead, the details are typically logged.
And, a simple search of the FAQs for the error message brings back an article whose title is the exact error message you quoted: http://www.zen-cart.com/content.php?...-and-try-again In it you will find information about how to determine the actual database error message, which will then give you the clues you need for actually resolving the problem.

Get a fresh backup of your production site
Import this into your new database and re-run zc_install selecting "upgrade database only

Ah, Thanks that is much more useful...

Ok.. it is not seeing the table db_cache and I can see why the table is named zen_db_cache with the zen_ prefix. Interestingly the original database tables all had the zen_ prefix and the test install did not.. so looks like I need to do a re_install and pay attention for where that prefix is set in the install..

    Keep ya posted..

    John..
