Remove links from Category Landing Page

I want to customise the first level category landing page, but by default it adds links to the sub categories. I want to be able to add my own content/links/images to these pages (i know how to do this), but can not figure out how to remove the default sub category links.

Why would you not want links to your cats/sub-cats???
As far as content and images you can add these in the admin > catalog > cat/product setup area

I do want links - but I want to be able to customise the landing page and how it is laid out. Perhaps if you take a look - I may not be explaining properly.

You can see I have added some text under the main heading, and it has automatically added links to the 7 sub categoriues under the text. I want to be able to customise the layout of where these links appear on the pade so thought it would be easier just to remove them and add my own.

I've tried this and I don't like the way it adds the image to the top of the sub category page.

I just want to make the category pages more "pleasing to the eye". By doing what your suggesting is not that attractive to look at.

Is it possible?

Presumably you want some text/images below as well as above the subcat links... this allows that:

Short Description for Categories

If you want to scatter the subcats around, consider whether it will make it easier or harder for customers to quickly find and follow appropriate links.

I could be wrong but it sounds like the other replies aren't understanding what you want. What I think you are saying is that you want the category/sub category page to look similar to the categories here(pipes, pipe tobacco,accessories): http://www.pipedivan.com/

They have removed the text links in favor of ONLY an image.

Confirm if correct and then someone can tell you how. My guess is to find that file and just remove the code that creates the link.

P.S. I like this look too, but haven't yet broken down to pay someone to make some worthy images.

You could do this in the stylesheet:

.categoryListBoxContents a {visibility: hidden;}

.categoryListBoxContents img {visibility: visible;}
