Using Authorize.net AIM
Have no payment zones set up.
Have one tax zone set up in Virginia.
It works on most orders but I guess I get this message on about 20% of orders.
They are from all over the US.
I have SSL enabled.

Got a call on this yesterday from someone in Virginia.

I entered an order and I am in Virginia and it works fine.

I can't figure what is triggering this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the error message happening based on a pattern of specifically what's in their shopping cart? Physical goods? vs downloads? vs everything free? vs using coupons or gift certificates?
Do you have the "freecharger" payment module enabled? If not, why?

I have not been able to find any pattern. I have tried different products. I only have physical goods, not downloads. I don't have any coupons or gift certificates. I have one product that has free shipping, all the rest have shipping charges.

I just went in and turned on the freecharger payment module. I thought this was if you have an all free order. I don't have any, but I turned it on anyway.

Could that be the problem?

freecharger is needed if someone wants to checkout with products whose total amount comes to 0.00 ... and in that case if freecharger isn't available (except for the case of using coupons or GVs), then the error message you mentioned will appear.

The error message you quoted is triggered when there are no payment modules whose settings or functionality suit the purchase the customer is trying to make. Reasons for this include:
- the cart balance is 0 and freecharger isn't enabled
- the active payment modules have zone restrictions associated with them, and the customer's address is outside that zone
- other criteria you've added to the active payment modules have set them to be disabled based on the criteria not being met

That could be the answer. Possibly a combination of the red flags came up and caused the problem. Maybe they didn't have any items in their cart or something else strange like that. We will see if the problem continues.

The key may be in finding out as much info from them as possible when they report it to you ... even trying to get them to reproduce it and telling you the steps to do so, etc.
