And remember: since the configure.php files are typically set to read-only, you will probably need to first change the file's permissions to writable before you'll be able to save your changes to it, else your changes will not take effect and you'll get unexpected (old) results.

Revert all changes you made to those files and edit it again - there are probably some typos causing PHP parse error.
