Not what Glenn said at all.. What he said is that the shipping scenario YOU want for YOUR store is not a common shipping scenario which is why it's not part of the basecode..

A per product shipping scenario is not an out the box scenario for Zen Cart... Hence why a third party module or some custom dev is required..

I'm so sorry, but I am have trouble with the idea that you can't customize Zen shipping such that you can use multiple shipping carriers ( because I sell small stuff too ) but only list for the customer the options that fit the product.

No one said it's not possible.. what has been stated is that it's not part of a the core codebase, and you either need custom development or an existing third party module.. Now if you don't want to buy the highly recommended third party module that will solve your problem, then you only have a few options:

1. hope someone here shares with you the code you need to get the result you want
2. you can start learning how to code yourself as Glenn has suggested
3. you can consider paying for the services of someone who can whip up the code you need for you
