Here's the latest: After some discussion with a MediaTemple tech, we changed the PHP from 5.3.27-stable to 5.3.27-fastCGI. This seemed to eliminate memory errors, but has generated a whole new crop of errors, all along the line of:

    [Tue Jul 08 19:04:05 2014] [warn] [client 96.58.61.254] mod_fcgid: read data timeout in 40 seconds, referer: http://quinceandco.com/store/index.p...dex&cPath=2_15
[Tue Jul 08 19:04:05 2014] [error] [client 96.58.61.254] Premature end of script headers: index.php, referer: http://quinceandco.com/store/index.p...dex&cPath=2_15

The MediaTemple rep says this is because the database queries are too slow and being terminated and suggested we review database logs to fix what's wrong...

However, we don't seem to be experiencing any issues either the front end or admin/back end -- these errors only show up in the server error log, no where else. So I don't know what to think.

While the default out-of-the-box with a new install of older versions of PHP used to set this to 8M, most modern hosting companies set this to 32M or 64M.
And the latest PHP 5.5.9 sets it to 128M *by default*.

So, if your hosting company wants to stay contemporary, they should be considering setting that limit to something higher.

Hmmm, this is interesting. The hosting company claims we have access to 99MB... but your statement would make me think that isn't correct. Is the 24MB I see in the ZC admin area a value set by ZC, or something ZC is reading and reporting back to me? In which case I'd need to change it somewhere else?

ZC is asking PHP what it's configured for, and reporting it back to you.

And that's consistent with the out-of-memory messages you posted earlier, where it showed that it had "used" 24,000,000 and needed more.

PHP configuration is done via php.ini ... so if your host gives you access to edit that for your domain, go ahead. But if they don't let you do that (many don't), then they'll have to edit the file for you ... which may affect everyone else on the server.
