Login and search disappeared from header

The login buttons and search box have disappeared from my header. I'm looking for a nudge of what settings and/or code I can examine to debug this issue.

I've already double checked my search_header.php sidebox settings in Admin > Tools > Layout Box Controller and the settings look good:

Box Name: search_header.php
Left/Right Column Status: OFF
Location: (Single Column ignores this setting) LEFT
Left/Right Column Sort Order: 0
Single Column Sort Order: 10
Single Column Status: ON

So, a week ago all those things were working fine?
What did you change on your site in the meantime? Add any plugins? Change any PHP files? Hosting company make server upgrades? Fire an employee who messed with settings before you deleted their login?

All are good questions. Some php and css files were changed but I've since tested backing out the code and restoring from my backup and the problem is still there. When I look at the code, the header code seems to be all there so it makes me wonder if it isn't a zc setting. Are there other zc settings for the login and search? I'm pretty meticulous and document everything I change and make regular backups. I will also check with my hosting company on anything they might have done.

There aren't any admin settings for that other than in the Layout Boxes Controller. If you can provide a link to the site, we might be able to spot something.
