link problem Extra long thread in the browser bar? after index?

    Hi there community :)
    This is my first post to the forum and look forward to chatting further... firstly though;

I am getting a longer thread than what should appear in the browser bar

    http://kyaniteking.asterexpos.com/ro...php?main_page=

I may have overlapped a page somewhere or something..
How do I get this back to just http://kyaniteking.asterexpos.com/rockshop/
Other pages are showing up in a similar way unless i hit HOME.

    Any help is appreciated

PS I wasn't sure where the proper place to put this was..

How/where are you getting this "longer" thread? When I navigated away from the main page and selected home button from top left the uri was as desired...

Also how was this siteput together, was it an upgrade from a previous version or a brand new install?

I'm not sure what the question is. Your site seems to be behaving as it should. What did you expect to see in the URL in your example?

help question Re: Extra long thread in the browser bar? after index?

    Thank you for the reply!

If I click on "home" the menu reads the way it should yes, without a tedious thread.
If I click to go to the Minerals page or any other than home page then the bar reads a long string after rockshop/
    http://kyaniteking.asterexpos.com/ro...=index&cPath=1

Is there a method of shortening the menu to read simply http://kyaniteking.asterexpos.com/rockshop/Minerals instead of the long extras?

    This is a new install.

There are several to choose from, but one question is what is the basis for the need to use/rewrite the URI?

The application that you would want to choose is one that is considered a URI rewriter. There are a few that are out there at various levels of support and provide different types/styles of rewritten URIs, some have commercial additions to them to make overall/long-term management "easier" (faster?). Ones that come to mind though not necessarily all inclusive are CEON URI Mapping (SEO), Ultimate SEO URLs, Simple SEO URLs for ZC 1.5.x, Multi-Language SEO URLs, etc...

These are each reported as being supported at various levels of ZC version. A word of warning as with any "plug-in" is that care should be taken before installing as there may be known issues/corrections/modifications (typically published in the associated forum thread) to be applied before incorporating into a live site... As always, backup before installation. Backup not only the store files, but also the database.

Also, in most cases, though not all, only one URI rewriter should be installed at any one time... By installation could mean having only one active at a time, or literally that the files of another URI rewriter should not exist/co-exist with the one to be used. Again there are some exceptions and those should be documented, but you will save yourself a lot of heartache and wasted time if you only install one and try it out. If you don't like it and plan to install another, then either revert back to the backups (which means files may need to be deleted) or setup another independent development store and try the "next" version. Be advised though even that "practice" may result in some problems. Again, easiest if keep to one and one only.

Now, back to the why... Search engines have no problem with finding the things identified/created by the store. (I.e., long URIs). Generally speaking the biggest reason to use these "SEO" friendly URI rewriters (which there is little to no proof of them "improving" SEO results) is to make landing on product/locations easy for guests/advertising. Generally speaking though, from a "store" perspective, one may want to have a relatively single entry point with all things branching from there; however, there may be a determined need to have multiple site entry points.

Another more "basic" way of redirecting to accomplish some of the above is to use .htaccess rules for specific links. The result will still generate a "long" URI, but access to the page(s) desired would be "direct".

Hope that helps a little better now that we all understand more about what the situation is/was.
