Default SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host

My store has been running great for a while. We have decided to use an email resource from reflexion and I needed to change my SMTP server and ports. I have done this before and its no problem normally.

    smtpauth
asp-submit.reflexion.net - SMTP server and the password is my reflexion login password as required by that server
    Port 587

I have tried port 467 as well. My IT guy says this must come from an SSL connection. Is there anything else I need to do to make this work?

    Thanks
    Chris

Check that there aren't any firewalls preventing a connection.

I can confirm that port 587 is the correct one. There is nothing listening on port 467

You could also try using the servers IP address rather than hostname (69.84.120.234). If you do this and find it works then you have a DNS problem.

well, we have proven that the SMTP server we want to use works. I have my Quickbooks system routing emails through that sever..the very first time I tried.

we have had my dedicated IP added as a trusted domain on the smtp server's side.

we have tried smtp with port 25 (as directed by that server team) with no joy.

we have tried smtpauth with port 587 with no joy

My host for the site (which is not the smtp server I am trying to reach) is Host Monster. They say nothing is blocked and its a problem on the smtp server end. I cannot see this being the case with the tests we have run. How would I test a firewall?

    Any thoughts?

Just FYI, I have a friend doing a ZC install at Host Gator and he is having the EXACT same issue. He has gotten Host Gator to push this issue up the chain to see what is wrong..unlike Host Monster. Yes, I know that they are owned by the same folks but it does appear that Host Gator is still running as an independent entity.
