My biggest concern is still the current server not allowing SSL / TLS access to the site via HTTPS. To protect your customers HTTPS should be enabled on any server you plan to host an e-commerce platform. Do you need to just purchase an SSL Certificate and they will setup the server with the certificate for SSL? Do they provide an alternative URL for HTTPS (such as ssl.example.com/~username)? Do you need to pay for a higher tier of hosting?

Looking through your "PHP Variables", I have confirmed my suspicions. Your hosting provider is proxying HTTP requests (most likely with Apache mod_proxy). This is unusual (but not unheard of). Most of the time when we see a proxy, it was added to support "https://ssl.example.com/~username" (external to hosting provider) => "http://real.example.com/" (internal to hosting provider). Because proxying HTTPS => HTTP is more common than proxying HTTP => HTTP, Zen Cart currently detects this proxy setup as SSL (to provide compatibility with the majority of hosting environments).

Long term, you need to answer the SSL / TLS questions above (at least for yourself) and decide if the hosting provider is a good fit for your needs... Depending on the answers and technical information only the hosting provider is privy to (regarding their hosting environment's configuration)... You may run into additional issues once you try to add SSL / TLS (HTTPS) support for your site (including more changes to the "configure.php" files and possibly alteration of a core Zen Cart file). Yes with enough information and the support of the hosting provider workarounds are possible... but it may be more cost effective to chose another hosting provider (or hosting plan) to start with (unless you feel comfortable troubleshooting, working with the hosting provider, and creating workarounds specific to the hosting provider).

A temporary workaround for now (NO HTTPS SUPPORTED), may be to just edit HTTPS_SERVER in both of the configure.php files to point to a dummy HTTPS_SERVER such as "ssl.procurement.designteamnigeria.com". This should result in Zen Cart no longer detecting the current "proxy" as an SSL request. This is not recommended for a production e-commerce website and failing to use HTTPS may violate the law in some countries.

Based on SSL not being enabled, the HTTPS_SERVER address should be completely ignored by the software and therefore not cause any issues, and further even with SSL enabled, the cart automatically switches to SSL as necessary (again default install) for sensitive areas.

Generally, just making sure that people are not going to run around and unnecessarily remove the s from https everywhere they see it, otherwise when/if they do get a SSL certificate and try to apply it, they will have to go find the right place(s) to put it back as designed. :/

I looked at the information supplied here which suggested putting in a false ssl link. Working on that information I opened the includes/config.php and, in the first section where you have to fill in the path/s to your shopping cart is changed the https://path.to.cart to http://path.to.cart.
The latest version of ZenCart now no longer has this info included in the admin/includes/config.php

This has the effect of resolving the problem however, my hosts are denying that there is any issue with their server setup and suggest I purchase an ssl certificate. This process will prevent customers from seeing page load errors and will allow you to continue to work and access the site without potential problems with the SSL.

With regards to the "insecurity" of the site, I somewhat leave that discussion for others as it is addressed multiple times through the forum, but yes it is generally suggested that a site operate using a SSL, and other organizations such as Google encourage the entire site to use https: (this way there is no question of whether the "correct" page used SSL or transferred information without the added protection of a SSL.)

First off, we seem to be getting side tracked...I think! The issue I am seeing, is the original one from the thread, that, with a fresh install, zencart displays without any pictures or styling. The ssl issue is a side one which spins off from this.

The config.php example you give above is correct as per my own BUT if I have line 6 as https://something then the site displays with the errors of no pictures and no styles and I think that is what we decided was incorrect behavior which is attributed to something the hosts are doing with their LAMP installation?
If I then change https:// to http:// in the file above, all is well except...I don't feel that it can possibly be secure if the hosts are fudging their software setup?
Does it matter, or is it significatnt, that I am on a shared server at present? There is an ssl certificate available but it comes back with the hosts name on it rather than my site! If by line 6 you mean:

Then, I would definitely do a review of the code used on your site, because with ENABLE_SSL as false, this line/definition should not even be considered or used throughout the site. Swapping to the default ZC template should show you how the pages should be accessed (all http:), and it is likely/possible that the current template does something to always use https:...

If though, you mean:

Then, well, that's somewhat on the install/settings that were applied... I am aware that the zc_install software does do a look at the server to identify the presence of a SSL, but am not (yet) intimately familiar with all of the checks it does and how it uses the data that it collects. I have seen that it can have an effect on the admin side, but the admin side uses a single server name which could be setup to use your shared SSL (albeit a different URL would be presented).

There are issues related to being on a shared server, but it should not change the fact of having/not having images display. Attempting to access a site using https: when that site is not setup to work with https: well, will provide an incorrect result. As said, you could use the shared SSL, though you lose your "uniqueness" by the URL showing your host's name and location rather than that of your own site. More of a PR issue than a technical issue. When you purchase a SSL certificate, things should be setup for you such that your URL will be presented and functional with https:.
