Google's new mobile directive in April will start branding sites as mobile friendly. They have provided a tool for testing websites at https://www.google.com/webmasters/to...bile-friendly/
Of course, the normal default template does not fair well with this and there a two alternatives, one is to get a mobile template and there are several for sale. I know of one that does test well and I'm sure there are others.
The other alternative is a responsive template. However, those are not necessarily going to pass. I was working on a site this morning with a bought responsive template and after looking at the way it was done, I thought it was pretty bad. Well, I tested it with the tool and I was right, it does not pass muster.
My personal opinion is that a template designed for mobile is the best way to go but if you are thinking about a responsive template, test it first!!
