how to create sub categories

I would like to show a category in my 'categories' box and also show sub categories under that, first I can't figure out how to create a sub category. first things first if I can create a sub category then I'll worry about how to get it in my category box

Have you defined products in the highest-level category (category ID = 0)?

I have products in my category ID0 you need to be more specific.

That's going to make it a bit more difficult, since you can't add categories to categories with existing products (hence my original question).

I'll need to think on this a bit to give you a good solution.

I can make sence of that but I want to add my categories to a new categories i.e. (new category "Cameras" and then add my categories like "Wireless Cameras" and "Hidden Cameras" to the top category of "Cameras"

starting to get there, thanks for that, is there a way to add an existing category with all its products to a top category? it would actually be a lot of work to redo all my products to the new category, maybe I could do in attributes???
