Why not using the stylesheet?
Anyhow copy html_header.php from includes/templates/default_template/common and put it in includes/templates/YOUR_CUSTOM_TEMPLATE/common
Add your style to it.

Just a note ... 99.9999999% of custom templates already have a /common/html_header.php, so make sure that you're not overwriting files.
