What are your experiences and some major problems that have arised when upgrading Zen Cart to the latest version?
I've tried upgrading without success. The Database Setup step I keeps resetting the includes/config file back to 644. I can't figure out why. I reset the file to 777, and they stay at 777 until I click the save button on the setup page.
Do I have to have the zen-cart-v1.3.0.1-full-fileset folder in the same directory as the shop I'm setting up?
I'm completely lost on upgrading. I can do a full install just fine.
Help!!

NOTE: if you set the configure.php files to 777 then upload a copy via FTP ... they will reset to 644
We do not change the permissions on your site ... only you do ...
Are you sure that when you set the permissions that they are really changing? Some hosting sites do not give you control over your own site ... go figure?

I'm not uploading them, just setting them on the server.
I thought at first it was the server restricting permission too so I set them, logged off, logged back on and they were still set to 777. They stay at 777 until I click SAVE on the Database setup page.
I've used cpanel to set them and core FTP lite (not FTPing them, just accessing them remotely and setting the properties.)
I can do an install without problems it's only an upgrade.

"setting them on the server" is uploading them.
The reason you are having this issue is likely because when you are installing your system may be making changes to that file - likely the saving your database is a mere coincidence. This happens to me all the time with the sites I run.
Many hosting companies recently have removed the users ability to change permissions using an ftp client. This means that you HAVE to change the permissions in the file manager in your CP. If you do ANYTHING to the file through your ftp (meaning any type of changes, replacements or transfers of that file) you MUST go into your Cp to change the permissions.
I run my sites on my own reseller space, and still do not have the ability to use the ftp to change my permissions, this is done by my host for security reasons.
If you are still having problems doing it the way I've suggested, contact your host and ask them if you have the rights to change file permissions.

I've had hosting companies that removed the users ability to change permissions using an ftp client.
I used cpanel the first 10 times I tried it. Clicking save reverts them to 644. Could it be reverting the permissions when it tries to write the file, basing it on the directory permissions?

OK, lets clarify all this so that we are sure we're on the same page.
I am assuming that you followed these steps exactly in doing this?I used cpanel the first 10 times I tried it.
1. Go into your Cpanel.
2. click on file manager
3. navigate through your files to the file you wish to set permissions.
4. click on that file to bring up the permissions list
5. click on the permissions you need and then click save.
Is this what you did exactly in this order?
Because if it IS then you need to ask your host why you can't set permissions.
Could it be reverting the permissions when it tries to write the file, basing it on the directory permissions?Yes.The reason you are having this issue is likely because when you are installing your system may be making changes to that file
However, You should still be able to use the method I described above to change the permissions. If you are unable to do that then something is wrong at the server level and you need to contact your host.

I have had problems with cpanel resetting to 644. The only way around is opening your ftp program and changing the permissions that way. Then they stick for sure. Seems to be a cpanel glitch for the past year.
Yup, exactly that order. They stay 777 until the installer acts on them. The server must prevent some files from being edited.
I've tried FTP clients, cpanel file manager, everything.
I'm wondering if it isn't PHP 5 or something.
I've put in a ticket to my host to see what they say.
