    Default instructions for upgrading

In the prior forum, there were step by step threads for upgrading from 1.2.6 or 1.2.7 to the current program software. The new forum does not have the old threads. If anyone copied the detailed upgrade instructions, can you post them. I was going to try to tackle upgrading my store this weekend. Thanks.

    Upgrading:

    Pre-upgrade

    1. Get the files you need.

You need to make sure when you are upgrading that you get the UPDATE package and not the full package. This is easy if you look at the files that are offered using the link in the header of the forums here.

    2. BACK UP YOUR SITE AND DATABASE If you don't do this, don't get mad when people don't help you on the forums...people who know Zencart KNOW when you've not done this and usually will give you only the bare minimum amount of help...after all, if you don't care enough about your own hard work to back it up, why should anyone here?

    3. Make sure your important files are in the appropriate classics folder and that you understand the templates over-ride system.

    4. Unzip the file and READ the documentation. Retrieve your ZenCart Docs(in the doc file in your regular shop installation, just in case.

    Upgrading

    5. Upload the new files to your server.

When you upload you must upload the files that are INSIDE of the folder that appears when you opened the zip file...don't upload the main folder that came out of the zip...
These files WILL overwrite many of your files...so be prepared for this. If for some reason you are unable to backup your files- at LEAST make copies of the files you will be overwriting.

    6. In your browser, type the path to your ZenCart site, followed by the name of the install file as directed in the instructions.

    Press go.

    7. Change your permissions on your configure.php file
    (path is includes/configure.php)
Use 777, if your server won't let you, you can try to use 755.

    8. Follow the instructions on each page. There are help links on each page incase you don't understand what something means.

    9. The rest is right in front of you after the install is completed so I won't go into it here...

Feel free to add if I've missed something.

Warning: Unless you are doing an upgrade such as the upgrade from v1.3 to v1.3.0.1 where there is a specific changed file Zip made ... always get the Full Upgrade of files to go from one version to the next ...

We do periodic Full Releases and Changed/Patch Releases ... these are two totally different things ...

When in doubt, get the Full Release ...

As a safety, backup your database and site ...

Create a test site and a test database with a copy of your live database in it ...

Test that the test site works ...

Now practice an upgrade on the test site ...

Until you can upgrade the test site perfect, you are not ready to try to upgrade your live site ...

They are still there. Just check out the archived "upgrading to 1.3" forum. Also search on Ajeh in that forum. She posted some very helpful How-To Step-by-Steps on upgrading.

As Linda stated do a FRESH install the new 1.3.0.1, then play with it for awhile, then migrate your 1.27 dB over to the 1.3.0.1 install.

Yes hopefully some of that pre-existing upgrade dcumentation will become sticky in the new forums and also integrated into existing FAQ.

And be sure to read the readme and upgrading docs files that come with the most recent ZenCart version.

Default Re: upgrading with RENAMED ADMIN FOLDER

I am trying to upgrade 1.3.0 to 1.3.0.1

I am doing this on a copied installation to test it out

had nightmare with viewing the /zc_install/index.php until I renamed the .htacces file in the install folder

Now my problem is that it will not proceed with the database upgrade because I have as recomended, renamed my admin folder

it just reports: admin/includes/configure.php does not exist

so we are recommended to change the admin folder, how do we get around this

I had thought to just run the upgrade script in phpMyadmin but did not know if this was all that was required for the upgrade

For the 2 minutes it takes to do the database upgrade, you could rename your admin folder back to "admin"...

    Thanks for the reply.

I wondered about that, but was worried if the database upgrade option would also try to write to the file and cause probs.

Is it is just a case of getting past the file exists/writable check?

If so, then that will be the easy workaround.
