I've deleted all but one flat rate shipping module, and set it to charge 5.00 for anythig. but my checkout page is now completely blank. I haven't set it to apply to any particular zone.

sounds like you are encountering a fatal error, but display errors is turned off, which leaves you with a blank page.
Check your error logs or turn display errors on for a moment so that you can see the error message. We'll be able to help much better with the error message

Thanks for your responses. I wish I knew about the debugger before, I stayed up late last night and upgraded the whole store to 1.3...
That being said, I'm about to post some questions about the upgrade!

Do not despair, check the contributed templates, start off by creating a your template override setup (see the overrides lisitng here) and use the template_default files or a contributed templates files only. Please donot start off with the combined original and new set as this will only cause you future grief and was included to ease the migration for 1.2.x functioning cart owners.Zen-Venom Get Bitten
