Admin/Catalogue default images squished up

Just installed zen 1.3.1 (the latest one)
and after installation all the default graphics are squished up, so I reloaded all images files - admin/includes; includes; languages english and it was the same across all three browsers. I refreshed, emptied the cache in my browsers.
Some of the buttons are missing from the admin side ie: the edit button in the layout controller / info button in the layout controller.
in the catalogue side, the default images are squished up, you can't see what they say or read.
I've even installed kurois future zen template which I love, thankyou! and the layout boxes heads and bottom rule have disappeared and the graphics remain squished.

Update:

Admin side - I've fixed the squished up images by changing the image size.

but on catalogue side, I'm only getting 1/2 a picture and
in the images i have turned off use proprtional
and changed ALL images setting to 0 (zero)

and yet, my product images are still being displayed @ 1/2 way down from the top.

Where can I go to fix this?

It happens in both classic and future zen templates.

FIXED.
Somehow I ended up with a buggy install of Zen Cart.
Did a fresh vanilla install.

Sounds like perhaps you uploaded the images the first time around in the wrong format and corrected the problem the second time around ...

Usually the 1/2 or crushed or damaged image "look" is a result of mixing up the ASCII (code) and Binary (images) formats on loading the files ...
