best way to issue store credit?

i would like to give my customers store credit, currently im sending them a gift cert by email to use as store credit, is there another method that works better? maybe a coupon, but i dont see how you could issue it to one customer unless you manualy email yourself.

is this for merchandise thats been returned,
or are you just giving store credits?

if the latter is the case then GC are not the way to go as these are redemable as cash since thats what they are ( a cash substitute )

I would offer discount coupons...
they are just that discounts

by definition a gift voucher is cash and can be redemed
