    Default configure.php permissions issue

Post installation, I have set the perms for includes/configure.php to 644, and I have verified it many times. I still get the red error text when going to the opeing shopping cart page at the root of the cart directory.

Sounds like your host's configuration requires that you use 444 instead of 644 to make the file read-only as far as Apache is concerned.

You may have to use your hosting control panel to set it that low, as sometimes there is a block against setting files 444 via FTP.

It appears that the host prevents me from setting it to 444 using ftp software so that I don't accidentally make my files read-only and call them for help. (?)

    That is not uncommon.
