Show all products in subcategories in Main Category page?

Is it possible to do the above?

Right now, if I click on a parent category, I get a description of the category and then links to the subcategories.

I would love to have my customers click on a parent category and have all products in that category appear on the main category page

Then if they want to drill down further, they can click on the subcategory in the categories box and that would only display products in the subcategory.

    Does that make sense?

Is it possible? I had originally linked my products to the parent category, but Ajeh pointed out that that might break my cart down the line...

    TIA!

Can be done, but will require custom coding to build retrieval functions, display-building module, and template for output. Much of it can be built from cloning existing components here and there.

Thanks Dr.Byte. That's what I feared. I suspect it's a bit over my head with my rather basic knowledge :sigh:

Any you give any pointers to which components you would suggest could help?

red flag Re: Show all products in subcategories in Main Category page?

So I really need to do this and would you guru's mind pointing me in the right direction to start?

    1. What are the template/module file names to edit the main subcategory page?

    2. Can you let me know what files I should look at grabbing/cloning the code from?

If I get that info then I think I could code this up.

Surprising no one has asked for this earlier, I would have thought this would be a features others would have wanted/built-in?

    Thanks!

Has anyone had any further luck getting this to work?

I asked a similar question twice already (although not quite so well explained) and haven't had any replies.

The method I tried to use was to create a new table in the ZC database to handle the extra "tags" for the items that would be used to "drill down" the search. The reason I wanted to use a new table is because apparently if you just add the new fields to the products table in the ZC database and ZC code changes, it can stuff everything up.

My thinking was that all items would be displayed in one category and then users would use links or populated drop boxes in a side box to perform a look up on the extra table. This would change the products displayed so that only items with matching information in the selected fields would display. I managed to create the table and the extra fields I needed but am too useless to link it to the products table via the products_id primary key. I also have no idea how to custom code the files - collect_info.php, preview_info.php and update_product.php to store and retrieve the info from the second table for adding the products.

I hope that some of you guys with coding and or ZC experience can tell me if I'm on the right track or indeed help me out with what I'm trying to achieve.

Thanks to anyone working on this and good luck.

    Yes thanks to yellow 1912.

It is discussed in his simple category tree thread.

    http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88215

Its working without error on my site. I have hunderds of categories, sub-categories and products. The products always show on category pages and the sub-caegories act as a filter.

Thanks a bunch. Hopefully my dramas have come to an end.

Maybe this open source stuff isn't so bad after all.

A possible work around is to do an easy populate export.

Sort in excel by cat1 then by cat2 (make sure to expand your selection)

rename all your cat2's to "All Products of Cat 1"

    save and re-import

easy populate will update your products which will duplicate/link them.

They'll be in 2 different cat2's (the all one and the specific one) then but when one sells they'll both disappear.

The only draw back is having to delete the duplicates when trying to update bulk products in excel.

I've done this as a work around for size filters too. But I have a lot of products.
