    Default Version current and upgrading??

FIrst, where do I check what version I currently have?
Not sure I understand all steps. Can't I just run simple script to update all files than make some of these changes.. Unfamiliar with some things. Can I just put it into and overwrite existing database?

1.Back up you site from the server as well as the copy on your computer.
    2.Backup your database
3.I would create a new directory and copy your site into it
4.Then create a new database and load your old database in it
5.Next, change the two configure.php files to utilize the new directory and database
6.This way ... when you attempt to upgrade you are "practicing" to see where the problems, if any will happen
7.Make sure all appears to be working on your temp site.
8.Now load the "new" version files to your new temp directory (from latest downloaded ZIP)
    9.Run the http://www.your_domain_name.com/your...ite/zc_install
    10.Run the Upgrade Database
    11. I would do one at a time based on what is checked ... leave the first checkbox that the upgrader picked checked and uncheck the others.
-Advantage is that you can see your problems step by step
-Each time it completes it will recheck the boxes left to go.
-Continue in this method until all boxes are unchecked.
-If you find you have issues, you are not hurting anything and can always start over without damage to your existing shop and live database.

Yes, my entire store is backed up. Can I just download the newest version? I have 1.2.2. It seems like you have to hard code a lot of pages and only overwrite some of them. Complex.. Is this necessarry? If, so, what if I just kept the old version? I didn't set this up initially and recently I had to go in and change some code on the config pages since we moved servers? Wouldn't it be dangerous in any way to do this?

I'd start with a test directory(we'll call it test for now).
Download the full 1.3.0.2 file set to /test.
    Set up a blank database.
Run test/zc_install AND install the demo items. They will help you see different ways the newer version can present product. Be sure to use the new database you created when asked for the database name, etc.
Once the install is complete, delete all tables in your test database and place your saved copy of the old database into the new database.
Run test/zc_install once more BUT --- DO NOT INSTALL You will get to a page that has a Database Upgrade button. Click the Database Upgrade button and sit back for the ride.
If all goes well with the database upgrade, your next step is to make sure the template is set to your liking. Once you have the template complete, you can move the cart to the old directory or rename test to the old directory's name. Either way, you will need to edit the configure files in admin/includes/ and includes/ to reflect the new directory name.

the configure.php file need to be set to not allow access. This can be done several ways depending on the server type, whether or not you have a control panel with your host, etc.

The warning tells you the location. If you are unable to set the permissions it asks for, contact your host for assistance.
