Editting Sidebox !

I want to edit my Categories sidebox, I want to place google ads to display right above the category links in the sidebox I think this is a pretty genius idea but can't figure out how to do it could someone please point me in the right direction.

Create a custom template, and customize the file

./templates/template_default/sideboxes/tpl_categories.php

I tried customizing that file however I can't get it to place within the box only above it or below it
