Default How do i configure my taxes?

When inputting new products it asks me if the product is taxable or not, net/gross, but if I'm not mistaken my provincial & federal taxes only have to be paid by those customers that reside in my province & country.

How does this work? I don't want all the products to show an inflated price of tax included, but at the sametime I need to make sure that my customers that need to pay tax do get charged.

Does Zen-cart recognize by location of customer & only charge those customers that fall into the right territory?

Zen can certainly do what you want. You'll find the settings in admin/configuration/Location-Taxes.

You can also follow along one or more of the threads right here in this forum. In particular, look carefully at the thread stuck at the top of this forum about configuring Canadian taxes. Even if you're not in Canada, the instructions are clear and you can make the changes appropriate to your country.

And of course, make sure you know for sure what the tax laws are and how they apply to your store.

Thanks, I setup the taxes according to that thread, I guess what I want to ask is can I setup products to be charged taxes but not show the gross price and instead the net price, so that not everybody is forced to see the inflated price.

    Hi nikita,

    admin/configuration/My Store ...
Display Prices with Tax - set to false in my store.

False = If you have something that is priced at $10 and a tax rate of 10% the customer will see $10 and the total in the cart will show $11. Is that what you want?

True = the customer will see the price with tax included if they are logged in and live in an area that you charge tax in. If they're not logged in the price will show tax if your store is in an area you charge tax in.

So I think you want that set to false.

I have a small problem, I think in my admin section when it shows my product and then my product with taxes, it is adding GST, PST & HST together because they are all in one class.

Will this problem fix itself when I'm actually purchasing in my store by Postal Code??

Because I just input a product at 99.99 and it told me the after taxes it is $129.97. We get taxed pretty heavily, but not quite that bad.

    Hi nickita,

I think the way it works is that if the shopper is not logged in, the store shows the tax based on where the store is, and if she logs in it shows the tax based on where she is.

The store should never compound taxes. You have something misconfigured.

You should have that one tax class set up for 2 tax zones - one zone for your provincial tax and one for the rest of Canada. Then your shipping tax class is also set up for the same 2 zones. Slog through the tutorial again; you missed a step.
