Calculate 'total savings'...

I would like to calculate the 'total savings' a customer makes and display this to them in the shopping cart.

For example, a product costs £10 and is reduced to £8.50, the customer adds 2 of these items to their basket. They are saving £3 in total.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction please?
