Install using a test path...

I have a test site set up with a new server. I would like to set this store up fully before I redirected my domain name, as it is being used by another site right now. Can I install and comfigure things like SSL, shipping and payment modules using a temporary path? How hard would it be to change when the time came?

*If I redirect the domain name now, it also means porting over a forum, and I'm not sure yet whether this server is the one for me.
