Main page text into scrollable text?

Hi there! I have a client who'd like to have a fixed size text box with a vertical scroll bar for the main page text. They basically want to be able to blog on the main page, but the layout only allows for a fixed size box, not one that fits the contents. Any tips? We're using 1.3.02 currently.

Thanks so much! I wouldn't mind upgrading, but I wouldn't be able to meet their deadline, unfortunately. Hopefully I can go back and work on an upgrade when their site is live.
