image instead of subcategories listing

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Instead of having the name of the subcategories listed in the main column when a category is clicked on, is there a way to put an image there instead? I would like a different image for each category.

You mean in the center of the shop or in the Categories sidebox?

I was hoping to do something of this sort, having images for clickable links, rather than just words.......and Yes, it would be in the main body, although, not the "home page"
Also, would it be possible to have a alternating / slideshow type of thing coursing through the entire folder of pics?

I can explain!
I started building the website with my NVU program, then signed up with my host, Powweb.
and then started to use some of their programs.
Currently I have Joomla, Zen-cart and gallery2 (which was G1, migrated)

I crippled along reading and trying to figure out things, ask a few Q's here and there, but haven't got it right at all yet. With learning, I do much better with visuals, as well as step-by step, with simplified language -- JUST like the ScreenBooks...............

MY original idea, plan and hope was to have a welcoming page, one clicks on either the fireplace pic or the verbage c'mon in and set a spell.....to "enter" the second page, which is a cobblestone "street" with vintage style storefronts......enhanced in the "windows" of these stores, would be the random highlight photo .................
