Do I have to have my cart send new customers emails upon sign up?
I don't want to bother them with un-necessary emails to notify them of sign up....

In the admin > config > email options > Send Copy of Create Account Emails To - Status > set to "0"

I did that. Will that prevent the customer from getting the email? (That's what I'm aiming for)
no thats just turns of the extra send to feature,
It would take a code change to get what you are after,
however, most places send a confirmation when an account is created,
just want you to think about, if this lack of a confirm email might confuse a customer.

How can I fix this??
Check your language files against the current version:
Make sure that your files are current and up to date and if using overrides that they are current and up to date .../includes/languages/english/email_extras.php
