Warning when upgrading to 1.3.5 using Fantastico

When upgrading to 1.3.5 using Fantastico, I found that everything appears to work using the normal template override system, BUT there's a subtle problem - new users can't register. I missed this in testing, and no users could buy anything for several days. :-(

I also discovered the hard way that the template override system doesn't work in the admin folders. :-(

I had to do the full upgrade procedure - back everything up, do a clean install, download the original version my templates were based on, run a diff, manually merge all the changes, tweak the new templates to restore the original appearance, etc.

It sounds easy but it took me ALL DAY. And my changes were fairly minimal - just fixing metric units, charsets and date formats for non-American users and removing the Zen Cart logo. I do NOT recommend upgrading until you have a free day to spend on it.

If that is the truth then is becomes unclear why the ZC Team would permit Fantastico to auto install...

Upgrading an initial Fantastico install, via Fantastico, gives results as outlined in post above

Me thinks Misty meant to say
Misty meant to say exactly what I said..
Fantastico does not always offer latest version of Zencart,
nor do they offer latest patches, neither is optional demo
cart installed, which would save many posts on these forums
about how to configure zencart i.e. downloads.
Am sure zencart team will correct me if am mistaken,
but recommended hosts for zencart are chosen if they
install zencart for their clients manually, and not via Fantastico.

customer issue Re: Warning when upgrading to 1.3.5 using Fantastico

How do people upgrade without using Fantastico? I have had more complete start overs everytime I tried to do it on my own. It takes me days to get back to where I was.

One should only use a Script Installer (Fantastico, AutoInstaller, Installatron, etc.) for creating a test area. By default, these script installers install scripts in a sub-directory which is perfect for a test bed. One can then test/play/experiment and only when ready for use on a live site, have a manual install done.

ImpactForGospel - methinks you are not using the overrides system and thus, your customizations always get over-written on an upgrade.

What should be done is either get Zen cart removed from the fantastico package, but this a way to introduce new users to the cart, except for the fact you don't get the demo products load or for the fantastico package to check and see if the cart is installed already and not allow a install. I don't know what influence the development team has with fantastico, but the second option seems resonable to me. The fantastico package shouldn't allow an install if the cart is already loaded and should popup a message to this effect and point users to the zen-cart.com site for upgrade info.
I think I did a 1 paragraph run on sentence up there.......... back to english class for me
