    Default HTML editor?inserts?question?marks?

    Hello all

What might be causing question marks to randomly appear in product descriptions and elsewhere?

    As an example:

We carry a range of?different French and Italian cheeses. Due to their fragile nature, and their requirement for expensive refrigerated couriering, we?only sell these in-store.

Epoisses, Brebis papillon, Bleu d'Auvergne, Brie de Meaux, Chevrot, Comte, Fourme d'Ambert, Laguiole, Livarot, Maroilles, Mimolette,?Morbier, Munster, Pierre Robert triple-cream brie, Raclette, Le Sarlet, St. Marcellin, Tomme de Brebis.

I've marked them in red. I can't quite see how they're getting in there. It's not my typing, and the client is not dumb; he's not leaning on the question mark key and from the content and the fact that it also happens on menu items occasionally I'd say that it is not caused by pasting in formatted text.

    Any ideas are much appreciated.

    Rob

You're probably using two different character encoding schemes, such as UTF-8, UTF-16, or ISO-8859-15. The question marks are probably special characters that your software doesn't know how to display. Try making sure both his browser and yours are set to use the same encoding (which should really be determined by the form document you're using, but some browsers allow you to override that). Or have him do a quick edit on your machine for testing purposes. I think you'll find the problem is related to differing encodings.

Thanks for the tip. I'll go over and try it on his machine.

The characters are always inbetween words where one would expect a space, but oddly it is only every now and then... though often enough to occur pretty much for every product.

There's certainly a clue in that it doesn't happen fom my browser so I'll go around and check his out. I did notice that he was running Win2K so his browser may be getting old too.

    Thanks for the reply.

    The cat got it!

So I went and checked the pc and everything seems to work. I couldn't make it insert question marks myself so I have to just leave him to watch in case it keeps happening. I was half-expecting to find some sort of keylogger or something heh
