    Default Creating 'product sets'?

    Hi Everyone,

Is there a standard way to create a 'product set' that offers other products from the same set when a customer looks at one individual item? For instance - a shirt, pant and jacket set where each item can be purchased individually, but the product details would inform you about the availability of the other matching pieces?

I have looked at the cross sell/ up sell module, but I would like something that works prior to the shopping cart (at the product info page), and I would only like to configure the sets once (as oposed to for every single piece). It would be nice if when the customer looked at the set, it would also inform them that they can also buy the individual pieces.

    Thanks

Look at the Better Together Contribution - this suggests product combinations and provides a discounting mechanism.

I'm not sure your customers would be tempted by an offer to buy something else and get 0% off.
You could still use it but it would be kind of weird. I guess you could always adjust the verbage.

    Good luck,

I was able to create a product set, and I did change the wording so that it did not offer the $0 off deal. It worked out fine, allthough with allot of product sets this would be hard to manage for someone who does not know PhP (like the store owner). Over all I was happy with the results and the mod did what it was supposed to and then some.

The person I was making the site for has since changed their direction a little, and now wants to offer the set, but within the set discription give a list of its components so they can be bought individually.

    Thanks Again.

Ah, but see: that's why he hired you! :) I have had store owners who are not programmers tell me they've added dozens and dozens of linkages, but then others are intimidated by the idea. I acknowledge that it's more difficult to copy and paste a line of code than it is to click on a GUI, but if you read this forum for a while you'll find that even clicking on a GUI can be pretty tricky in some cases. Think back to high school combinatorics, and you'll see how as the number of choices grows, the number of possible outcomes gets large fast.

Anyhow, I'm glad it worked out for you in the end. If his recommendations repeat a lot (product A from category 1 is always recommended with products from category 2), take a look at my tip on using boilerplate in your product description:
