I'm seeing no tax-description on checkout

When you created your tax rates, what did you enter for a description? If you leave it blank, you'll see ...well ... blanks...

I know this is an old thread... but given the amount of space in the header, and detail line - could the 'name' be put up on the detail line as well? This would allow us to spot a blank fairly quickly...

Ya, that's something that's been added to the v2.0 edition currently in development, along with warnings if a blank value is found or is attempted.
