Authorize and Capture Paypal funds for down payment

Hello-

I'm trying to set up a mechanism for down payments on my Zen cart. I use Paypal for proccessing, and am of the mind to use the Authorize and Capture capability. But I can't find much documentation on how to set this. Is it feasible? If so, what are other user's experiences? Am I better off just separating the down payment and remainder into two items?

With the PayPal Express Checkout module, you can easily select whether all your transactions are treated as Authorizations or as Final Sales (immediate captures). You can separately "capture" authorized transactions later. But you need to Authorize the entire purchase from the beginning, and do several subsequent captures. There are some time-limitations for completing those captures.

If you're looking to split up payments into several phases, sorry, that's not an available option within Zen Cart's default modules at the present time.
