Credit card numbers not storing

I have a client who is experiencing and intermittent problem. They have part of the CC digits coming via email, while the others are stored in the database. Every once in a while, the digits do not get stored in the database, but they ARE emailed. Further, the CCV, card type, name on card, and expiration ARE all stored in the database properly.

The client is running 1.3.6 and is using the standard Credit Card module. The customer only experiences this problem every one in many many orders.

This is completely baffling to me. Any ideas? SQL server failure?!

Not yet. The client has hired me to solve some problems they're having, this being one of them.
