Group discount...

I have a group of 600 users who can sign up and get a 10% discount.
I have created the user discount in zencart, but what is the best way for them to sign up to that user group?
I could manually add them after account creation by them, but then they couldn't buy at discount rate on first visit....
Is this easy to work out?

Don'y think that can be done without modifying the core code. What I do is that I issue a coupon code with the same discount for first purchase and then add them to the buying group. Hust be sure to only allow usage of coupon once per customer.
