Image Format Change

I was looking at replaceing some of the standard button graphics with .png instead of .gif files. For example, the "Buy Now" button, but others as well. I know where to save them, but I can't figure out where I should update the code to look for the png instead of gif. Is there a php file to edit, where I could change all of the instances of the buttons to look for the png file?
