Replacing/removing logo

I replaced the logo's background image with what I would like to become the logo. How can I

1) remove the logo.gif from being displayed (that includes its hotlink)

2) make the logo's background banner (header_bg.gif) act just as the logo.gif did, as in take the visitor to the index?

Also, how do I change/remove the "Your slogan here" text that is displayed on top of the header picture?
