how do I know if my service is taxable?

I am offering a service on my website. There is no product other than a membership to the site.

Are all services taxable? Since there is no product does that mean that there is no sales tax?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm not very good with tax stuff.

You need to ask your local Tax Authority.

Every State is different, and even where to contact for accurate information within a state can vary.

Although I have not checked/updated them "in awhile" you may find the links in the Governmental & Legal Links for State Sales tax useful

I live in Florida and have a small computer repair and web design business. I file my taxes quarterly with the Florida Department of Revenue. If I create a website for a customer, I have to report my earning but it is not taxable, but if I give that customer a CD with the website, then the earnings become taxable. Once a tangible item is involved the earnings become taxable.

I recommend you check with your located Department of Revenue office. Were I live, the office provides a free call every Tuesday, you can check and see if that is a service available in your state also.
