Sold Out Product and Notification

How can I setup my product page so when a product is sold out, a message and a link is displayed so the customer can register as a member and to receive a product notification? I have looked at some threads with similar questions but not a real solution. what level of customization is needed? I appreciate any help or suggestions

I am going for a similar set-up on my site. Does anyone have any idea how to go about this?

I was thinking about making the "Sold Out" button do the same thing as the "Product Notifications" link in the sidebox. Then I would change the Sold Out Button to say click here to be updated when the product is back in stock.

This should be doable, but I cannot figure out how the sold button works in the tpl_product_info_display.php
