Hi there,
I am going to have to move a few ZC's over the next few days and had an Idea, and was looking for comments on my idea.
Propagation of a url from DNS to DNS can be painfully slow for some people, I mean who wants to have their site down for up to 48 hours to some people.
In the past what I have done is set up the new server and worked from the IP or a DNS zoned sub domain, on the new server. I get it all set up and then put the site that is running on the old server into maintenance mode.
At that point I get a fresh copy of the data base and put it on the new server, take that off of maintenance mode, and change the DNS, and wait for propagating. so only people w/ updated whois servers get a live site.
What I want to do now is copy all the files over to the new server, but have the config on the new serve pointing to the old mysql server (via IP address). So when I change the DNS either way, during the propagation period if they get either server, they get a live database.
What I am worried about is session data getting messed up and having some one loose the contents of their cart should they get changed over while browsing.
Ok it was an Idea, tell me why I am a genius or a total moron who is missing technical details that a 5 year old can grasp.
