customer issue Missing product download link in customer account

I asked the following on another thread and didn't receive a reply... so either I didn't put it in the right place or there's no help for me...

I'm at a loss here. I received an email from a customer who purchased several items from my store. She wrote to tell me that two of the items are not available to her for download.

When I checked the customer's order in admin, I found that the order lists all the products she purchased, but only one of them is missing from the download area. I have checked the product attributes and everything seems to be ok there. I checked the download manager and it seems ok there as well. The 'missing' product has been purchased by others and has been downloaded in the past, so I'm really stumped here. In fact, the product in question is one of my most popular products.

While I am asking about this... is there any way to add a product to the customer's download area?
    thanks!

Have you an URL to the Product that has this problem so we can perhaps look to see if it is configured correctly?

    Hi Linda,

Thanks for the quick reply. Here's the link to the product page:
    http://www.ljidesigns.com/zstore/ind...roducts_id=102

I'm *very* green working with the cart so I'm lost in there most of the time...
    thanks!

Do you know what format she said she picked?

Also check this Product in the Attributes Controller ... do all filenames have a nice green dot next to them?

The order page shows the format as
    - :

instead of a format. How did THAT happen? That is not one of the choices. I will write to her and ask which format she picked when she ordered and post back when I receive a response from her.

Yes, each format has a green dot showing in the attributes.

Is there a way to force the customer to choose a *valid* format before they can add the item to the cart?
    thanks!

If you built an Attribute with a download ... isn't that a valid format?

Or do you mean choose one purposely?

If so, add a format Option Value called:
PICK THE RIGHT ONE! (or something like that)
    Sort Order 0
    Default YES
    Display Only YES

Now they have to purposely pick a format ...

Yes, one would think they have to select the format. However, often they don't select the format they want and I end up having to email the product. What I wanted to do was force them to choose the format they want instead of receiving the defaulted format.

That solves one of the problems I have with the formats, but it doesn't explain how she managed to get - : as a format choice on that design since it is defaulted to the ART format.

I just added the Option Value, but don't see where I can do the Default YES and Display Only YES part of the option value. Where is that located?

Ok... I found out where... on the product attributes page. So... is there a way to make this appear on all the products in one fell swoop instead of having to edit each product? (There's almost 400 products!)
    thanks!

How many categories do you have?

You could make a temp product with the one attribute and copy to all products in a category ...

Approximately 35 categories and sub categories.

Would that cause all products, despite their attributes, to receive the new attribute or would it only apply to those products that have the FORMAT attribute? The attributes on some of the products include A Size, A Year, and Instant Download - would they also receive the new FORMAT attribute if they are included in the same category?

Another question... related to this... If a product could have more than one attribute, say, a size and a format, what is the best way to display them? Two drop down boxes seem cumbersome, but a line of check boxes seems more cumbersome. Is there a way to combine the two attributes?

For instance, one category is set up with A SIZE because there are six sizes of each product. But there are also six possible formats to choose as well. Both are important, but the easiest way I found to set the product up was to pick the SIZE and then combine the formats in the download. On some products that could be a very large download which could cause problems for some people.
    thanks!
